I remember when I began managing people. I figured that I would just tell people what to do and they would do it. As I’m sure you can imagine, I learned fast that the world didn’t work that way.
Whenever I didn’t get the outcome I wanted, I tried to understand why. I became a student of human behavior. I read everything I could find. I worked hard to understand myself and others. I wondered what I was doing that was getting the results I didn’t want, and what I could do differently to get a results I did. I know that sounds obvious, but I didn’t think that way. Most people don’t think that way.
My goal was to learn the best way to get things done. I tried a lot of things. I worked harder. I took on more responsibility. I took on the jobs no one else wanted. Anything I could do to learn how to be better, I did it. It was exhausting. What I didn’t know then, but understand clearly now, is that I needed a coach.
I didn’t get one, and I made lots of mistakes. I managed as if my employees liking me was more important than respect. I felt I had to prove myself every day by working harder, longer, and faster than them. A coach would have helped me to lead others based on who I was, not on who the latest Author says I should be.
A coach would have given me the confidence and understanding to act on what was in the best interest of my people and my organization, and myself. A coach would have shown me how my idea of leadership was creating unnecessary stress that was taking a toll on my health and well-being.
